If my lifestory is ever told through film, I think today’s events would best be summed up through a video montage. There was chasing pigeons through deserted, sun-drenched plazas. Getting lost in massive, Gothic cathedrals. Strolls along the river. Card games, betting and copious beers. Giggles. In essence, it was a wonderful day off. I’m…
This holiday season, the U.S. Postal Service is offering commemorative stamps to celebrate Nutcrackers as well as a new traditional stamp featuring the work of artist Sandro Botticelli, called Virgin and Child with the young John the Baptist. Perfect for giving bland envelopes a little something extra! When Patti sent me the information on these…
I bet that even the most solitary monk, living in a remote cave in some foreign country, knows that Healdsburg is a mecca for wine lovers. Ideally located just a short drive from more than 100 award-winning wineries in the renowned appellations of Alexander Valley, Dry Creek Valley and Russian River Valley, Healdsburg makes the…

I’ve been in Seattle the last few weeks, trying to cope with all the mayhem of moving my mother out of her home, (surrounded by movers, painters, and realtors) and into a condo we’re remodeling, (surrounded by movers, painters and handymen) when her refrigerator chose this highly inopportune moment to gasp out it’s last dying…

PIERRE, S.D. – A woman who died two months ago won a county commissioner’s race in Jerauld County on Tuesday.
Democrat Marie Steichen, of Woonsocket, got 100 votes, defeating incumbent Republican Merlin Feistner, of Woonsocket, who had 64 votes. Jerauld County Auditor Cindy Peterson said she believes the county board will have to meet to appoint a replacement for Steichen. Peterson said she’ll check with the state’s attorney to be sure that’s the process. Peterson said voters knew Steichen had died.
“They just had a chance to make a change, and we respect their opinion.”
