For generations, San Francisco’s Fillmore District has been a place where music, culture and community come together.
During the neighborhood’s legendary jazz era, clubs along Fillmore Street welcomed some of the greatest names in American music, including Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Billie Holiday, Louis Armstrong, Charlie Parker and John Coltrane. Its extraordinary nightlife earned the neighborhood a lasting place in jazz history—and the nickname “Harlem of the West.”
Born from that remarkable legacy, the Fillmore Jazz Festival began in 1986 as part of a renaissance taking place along Fillmore Street. What started as a neighborhood celebration grew into the largest free jazz festival on the West Coast, bringing generations of musicians and music lovers together in the very streets where San Francisco jazz history was made.
Today, the festival remains unmistakably Fillmore. For one summer weekend, Fillmore Street becomes a stage, alive with jazz, blues, soul and contemporary sounds. Artists, makers, local businesses and food vendors line the route as thousands of people gather to share the experience.
Each year, it is a celebration of a neighborhood whose cultural influence reaches far beyond San Francisco.
In 2027, the Fillmore Jazz Festival celebrates its 40th anniversary — four decades of keeping music in the streets and honoring the artists, merchants, residents and community that have made the Fillmore one of San Francisco’s most storied neighborhoods. The celebration continues July 3 & 4, 2027. Plan your San Francisco vacation around this key event!
