In a one story brick home in Milwaukee Wisconsin, I grew up the only child of the only Jewish, over-educated, east-coast native parents in the entire school district.
My predominantly Scandinavian and German neighbors kept to themselves and meticulously groomed their homes. Often playing alone in the yard or going on rides to nowhere with my mother, it never occurred to me to watch the television or even make a phone call. The only thing that got the neighbors together would be the sound of an approaching fire engine. People would suddenly appear with folding lawn chairs, lining up on the sidewalk in an orderly fashion to watch the fire.
Such were my beginnings as an outsider. I now capture that glimpse into other people's inner worlds, like Diane Arbus on a good day or a midwestern Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Now living in California, I find it just amplifies the otherness of the Midwest in my photographs. It is no longer my home. I use the eyes of a now foreign traveler to help reveal what was hidden to me as a native.
Writing is my new love.
I've got enough shiny statues now to prove to who knows that I succeeded in television. Eleven Emmy Awards, 2Associated Press, 2Edward R Murrow, 5RTNDA, shared Peabody, much etc.
I just completed my reign as President of the SF/Nor Cal chapter of NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences).
In October 2010 I was inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle.
It's an award for exceptional contributions to the local television community and hanging in there for at least 25 years.
I've continued to identify as an artist, concentrating on photography.
My work has been in several juried competitions and collections. I recently started doing author photos. Check out the next book by Pulitzer Prize winning author Alan Taylor.
All things full circle, I've revived my high school obsession with making jewelry & fashion. laceproject.etsy.com.
And travel. Always traveling. Some things don't change.
by Alexa Evans Apparently, you can have too much Sauvignon Blanc. Although I am admittedly quite fond of the herbaceous varietal, a taste I obtained while residing in New Zealand, I temporarily called a moratorium on all glasses of glistening white vino until I was certain they would no longer induce spinning rooms. The decision…
Last chance to splurge on art. If only the bumbling Inspector Gadget was still around. I’m sure he would find all the gizmos and gadgets on display at the gdgt.com West Coach launch party on Tuesday, August 4th from 7-10pm at DNA Lounge most impressive. But you don’t have to be an International (wo)man of mystery to appreciate all the product…
At last! The federal government is getting it that tourism is important to the well being of this nation. And you can get involved and support this act – which is not going to cost tax payers any money. The “Travel Promotion Act,” S. 1023, which is expecting a vote today in the U.S. Senate…
One woman’s junk is another’s treasure. In the case of the Alameda Point Antiques and Collectibles Faire, I found mostly the latter. I have long wanted to check out the Faire – touted as Northern California’s largest antiques and collectibles show. More than 800 outdoor dealers sell their collections on the first Sunday of every month at…
