In a one story brick home in Milwaukee Wisconsin, I grew up the only child of the only Jewish, over-educated, east-coast native parents in the entire school district.
My predominantly Scandinavian and German neighbors kept to themselves and meticulously groomed their homes. Often playing alone in the yard or going on rides to nowhere with my mother, it never occurred to me to watch the television or even make a phone call. The only thing that got the neighbors together would be the sound of an approaching fire engine. People would suddenly appear with folding lawn chairs, lining up on the sidewalk in an orderly fashion to watch the fire.
Such were my beginnings as an outsider. I now capture that glimpse into other people's inner worlds, like Diane Arbus on a good day or a midwestern Henri Cartier-Bresson.
Now living in California, I find it just amplifies the otherness of the Midwest in my photographs. It is no longer my home. I use the eyes of a now foreign traveler to help reveal what was hidden to me as a native.
Writing is my new love.
I've got enough shiny statues now to prove to who knows that I succeeded in television. Eleven Emmy Awards, 2Associated Press, 2Edward R Murrow, 5RTNDA, shared Peabody, much etc.
I just completed my reign as President of the SF/Nor Cal chapter of NATAS (National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences).
In October 2010 I was inducted into the NATAS Silver Circle.
It's an award for exceptional contributions to the local television community and hanging in there for at least 25 years.
I've continued to identify as an artist, concentrating on photography.
My work has been in several juried competitions and collections. I recently started doing author photos. Check out the next book by Pulitzer Prize winning author Alan Taylor.
All things full circle, I've revived my high school obsession with making jewelry & fashion. laceproject.etsy.com.
And travel. Always traveling. Some things don't change.
by Kelly N. Patterson “This bus is going to fall,” I cried out in my Swahili 101. It was both a statement and a question. The Buddha-bodied, sarong-wrapped woman to my right laughed at my big worried eyes. “No, young sista,” her electric white teeth glowed through me. Hamna tabu, no problem. Her corpulent arm,…
by Shauna Billings Mykonos is called The White Island because of its whitewashed houses and churches that dust the low, rolling hilltops like powdered sugar. It could also be named The Blue Island, for to experience Mykonos is to finally see the color blue, in all its intricacies, for the very first time. The doorways…
