Janice Nieder could be the love child of Indiana Jones and Julia Child. She was a specialty food consultant for 12 years in New York, with a client list that included Tavern on the Green, Dean & Deluca and Sign of the Dove. After being bitten by the travel bug, her culinary adventures took her to over 65 countries, where she shared a smoked monkey dinner with a generous Shuar Indian family deep in the Amazon Jungle; helped Ethiopian tribal woman bake injera bread on hot stones in 108 degree heat; and crashed a wedding feast in Pakistan, where she was wined and dined by over 200 men - and no women. Last year, she mistakenly bought camouflage clothes to participate in a week-long truffle hunting safari in Marche, Italy, never tiring of the decadently delicious fungi feasts.
To keep things in balance, Janice also enjoys writing about spas, fitness, local crafts and culture. Her articles have appeared in International Travel News, Runner's World, San Francisco Journal for Physicians, Slow Food USA, San Francisco Professional Food Society News, Business Women's Journal, Norway Post, Airline magazines and numerous websites. But her real passion is working with underdeveloped countries to protect their cultural identity by preserving their traditional foods and cooking methods. To this end, Janice has written numerous articles about her culinary discoveries, assisted local producers with bringing their products to market, and consulted with tourism and business leaders on developing and promoting local farmers markets, cooking classes, and culinary tours.
Janice has received San Francisco's Community Leadership Award of Excellence for her on-going work as the Volunteer Coordinator for C.H.E.F.S. ( Conquering Homelessness Through Employment in Food Service) a program she helped develop that provides culinary and job skill training for the homeless. She is also a leading member of the San Francisco Professional Food Society, Bay Area Travel Writers, and Slow Food.

Where I shop in Italy: Venice
I’ve been fortunate enough to build a business — Sorelle Bionde — that requires travel to Italy, frequently. Logging countless hours wandering the streets and passageways of cities such as Milan, Florence, Venice, Rome and more, I have uncovered great finds from artisans and designers who truly do march to their own beat. The result:…
where do you want to go?
Today I got an email from David with the question: Where do you want to go? Galapagos, Otavalo and Peru? Botswana, Namibia? Rwanda or Uganda to visit the Apes? And though the day could not have been more jam packed with deadlines, phone calls emails, links, etc this question brought on a stillness. I forgot…
Dinner With My A List Man
We all have them. Those lists. The lists of: “Designer shoes you want to own,” “Places you want to visit,” and the somewhat-unattainable “Amazing people you want to meet.” One of my peeps on that list was the “Boss” of Travel, Peter Greenberg. You know him as the Travel Editor on the Today Show, and…
MICROBE and GASOLINE: film review
French films are master classes in ambiguity. They fearlessly take on deep issues and situations where nothing explodes or hilarity ensues with a laugh track. Like life, French films refuse to wrap up with a tidy bow. *Microbe and Gasoline* is no exception. MICROBE: Daniel is the school outcast, nicknamed Microbe, thanks to his short…
Day 6: Nájera to Santo Domingo de la Calzada
I’m a girl who loves to know the history of the place I am visiting — even more so when it’s kitsch. And Santo Domingo de la Calzada has a great story to share! The Cathedral is famous for the live cock and hen kept in a cage in celebration of a local legend involving…
The BIG Birthday Getaway :: Santa Barbara, pt.6
Solvang is an all-in-good-fun slightly hokey, homey Danish American town affectionately referred to as Little Denmark. European farm-style buildings line the colorful flower-filled streets, and authentic Scandi bakeries,(I loved the “kringles” almond paste filled racetrack shaped pastries but was not so big a fan of the overly-sweet “aebleskiver,” fried pancake balls ladled with raspberry jam…
