The Georgia Coast is the perfect place to welcome spring. The landscape is alive with a palette of vibrant colors and breathtaking natural wonders. The sand dunes, salt marshes, grand oaks and tidal waters of St. Simons are timeless reminders of the barrier island’s uniqueness and significance to the eco-system.

The Left Bank Art Gallery, a southeast icon for over 40 years, invites us to celebrate the season with a special art show reception on April 14: 4:30-7 p.m.

Exhibition will run through May 7, 2011

Discover some of the finest painters in the region and the world … more importantly; uncover the gallery’s most valuable asset – its owner, Millie Huie Wilcox.

Millie is a visionary, an artist, a collector and a historian. Her humble beginnings in Albany, Georgia did not stop her from building a successful business and making her mark in the community. Her zest for life mirrors her gallery – diverse and dynamic!

Her career adventures include fashion model, design assistant to a top European fabric house, civic leader, philanthropist, and columnist. But it is her insatiable love of the great French masters and her artist mother’s mentoring that fueled her passion for art. Millie’s parents came to St. Simon’s Island in the early 1950s. Her mother, Mildred Nix Huie, a noted Georgia artist in her day, exposed Millie to the mystique of the art world at an early age. Since that time, Millie has been hooked.
Her reputation as an arts advocate and an animated storyteller has reached beyond the island. Today, Millie honors her mother and her works with a beautiful museum. The museum offers an intimate glimpse into the artist’s life given it encompasses the artist’s original studio structure and the oak canopied grounds where she spent countless hours painting and writing. Inside, you will find special collections featuring the artist’s renowned plantation series and coastal landscape paintings, as well as, Mildred’s extensive private collection of artifacts tracing the island’s rich history.

Millie pays tribute to the legacy every day with her generosity – sharing her infectious smile, southern charm, and wealth of knowledge with all who cross her path.

Count yourself lucky, if you can steal a few moments with this Georgia treasure.

Millie will capture your heart!
