The best way I can describe Bergen, Norway is simply, magical. Coming in on the ferry just after sunset, the Old Town sparkled over the water, its colorful buildings with the boats bobbing in front of them mesmerizing. I fell in love with the city before I ever set foot on the dock.

There is so much to love about this place. Wandering is delightful, from the dockside seafood market to the meandering cobblestone streets.

The Thon Hotel Bristol is an excellent location, mere steps from the wharf and ferry landing, and all that Old Town has to offer. The hotel is also close to Fisketorget, the fish market, the Bryggen waterfront and a short walk to other attractions in Bergen, such as the aquarium and the Fløibanen funicular railway. It’s also in the midst of a fairly lively area full of restaurants and bars. The hotel was recently renovated, resulting in chic rooms with a warm yet modern Scandinavian aesthetic.

The breakfast included at the hotel’s Egon Restaurant was a highlight of my stay, and the best hotel breakfast I’ve had throughout Scandinavia. With the traditional European offerings of fruit, pastries and a meat and cheese tray, the breakfast buffet also included two types of salmon, several pickled herrings, pancakes, four types of eggs, sausage and potatoes.

A truly delightful way to begin your Bergen exploration!
