Fresh Catch in Monterey
Jacks at The Portola Hotel & Spa, located in the heart of downtown Monterey adjacent to Fisherman’s Wharf, is pleased to announce a new concept and menu centered on fresh California coastal fare using local and sustainable ingredients. Created by Executive Chef Jason Giles, the menu reflects an ongoing dedication to the local environment and represents up to a dozen purveyors at any given time.
“Monterey County is incredibly bountiful and we wanted Jacks to represent the land and sea around us,” said Giles. “Our goal was to provide residents and guests with the finest and freshest local cuisine on the Central Coast whether it’s in-season sustainably grown regional produce, Harris Ranch’s 100 percent naturally raised beef or seafood chosen in support of the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s ‘Seafood Watch’ program.”
Jacks uses a variety of sustainably-sourced, organic and seasonal ingredients from purveyors within 100 miles of Portola Hotel & Spa, including Harris Ranch’s 100 percent naturally raised beef; fair trade and organic coffees and teas from Peerless Coffee, a proud family-owned business that has been roasting in Northern California for the last 86 years; and handcrafted drafts from neighboring PeterB’s — the Monterey Peninsula’s only brewpub. California is renowned for its wine growing regions and the wine list at Jacks is representative of the full-bodied Chardonnays and complex Pinot Noirs produced in Monterey County. The hotel and restaurant are also ardent supporters of Monterey Bay Aquarium’s ‘Seafood Watch’ program, which leads the nation in promoting sustainable fishing practices.
“Portola Hotel & Spa has always been passionate about the environment and this year — as we aim to achieve Silver Level LEED Certification — we are extremely pleased that Jacks represents this same commitment to sustainability,” said Janine Chicourrat, general manager of the hotel. “Beyond their eco-consciousness, Chef Giles and his culinary team have artfully produced mouth watering meals that lend an authentic taste of Monterey.”
Located steps from Fisherman’s Wharf, celebrated as Monterey’s “Best Kept Secret,” Jacks at the Portola Hotel & Spa is truly a unique experience. The restaurant’s warm and welcoming atmosphere echoes Monterey’s charm and history while the menu offers a selection of local and regional specialties such as the Grilled Harris Ranch Tenderloin of Beef with Garlic Herb Whipped Potatoes & Blue Lake Beans ($32) and Pan Roasted Black Cod with Lemon Thyme Risotto & Baby Beets ($26).
