1. Where do you like to flirt?
Anywhere my wife isn’t. Don’t judge, it’s harmless, usually.
2. What are your favorite places to eat and drink?
This may offend Divas. However, I like a place where I can expect good food and a casual environment. I avoid eating in hotels and restaurant that have votive candles and vases filled with small stones or colored marbles. Cafe del Rey in the Marina is one of my favorites. So is Patina.
3. Where should we stay when we visit?
With a friend. Most good L.A. hotels are poorly located with good amenities or well located with no amenities. Marina del Rey is nice.
4. What qualities do you find irresistible in a woman?
A sense of self that comes with time and self-reflection. Loose morals coupled with a drinking problem is also high up on the list. Posturing and attitude reeks of insecurity and usually invokes my pity, and sometimes sarcasm.
5. Where can we find you on a free Sunday afternoon?
LACMA (the Los Angeles County Museum of Art) with my kid gluing macaroni to poster board and painting it gold. Sadly, not many free Sunday afternoons. but LACMA has loads to offer beyond a good permanent collection and the Tar Pits.
6. What do you love most about your hometown (besides our arrival)?
Los Angeles speaks over 160 languages, Olvera Street, Chinatown, KoreaTown, the beach, Froggy’s in Topanga Canyon, the museums: the Getty Center and Villa, LACMA, and Norton Simon.
7. What should we bring when we visit? What should we leave with?
Bring a full tank of gas as L.A. is sprawling with lousy mass transit. Leave with an attitude adjustment as L.A. gets an unfair bad wrap from an association with the film industry or a perception of vacuousness surfing locals. Actually the folks I grew up with are well-read, well educated, well-informed.
8. What do we absolutely have to see while we’re there?
Hiking in the Santa Monica Mountains, tourist watching in Hollywood at Mann’s Chinese, The Hollywood Bowl on a warm summer evening, The Pantages Theater, The Farmer’s Market (wait for the contestants from the Price Is Right to spill into the parking lot, Old Town Pasadena.
9. Any areas of town we should avoid?
Not really. Dodgy neighborhoods are hard to find and there is not a reason to drive into them. Maybe the boring trek to the Hollywood Sign.
10. Any local secrets you want to share?
Take Laurel Canyon to and from the Valley, not the 405. Then stop at Pick up Stix, just off of Ventura Blvd., for House Special Chicken, the best junk food in the city. The Land of Oz on Longwood, but you’ll have to find someone who has a key.
