International Women’s Day (8 March) is designated in many countries as a national holiday for all women to put aside their ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic and political differences, and join together to honor almost 100 years of struggle for equality, justice, peace and development.

But no one said we can’t have a little fun and dress up pretty while we do it. If you hurry you can still snap up a ticket and celebrate with about 500 others the at the International Museum of Women’s (I.M.O.W.) fifth Annual Gala on Wednesday, March 4, 2009 at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco. The evening’s featured speaker is the inspiring activist, founder of Women for Women International, and I.M.O.W. Global Council member Zainab Salbi. Mistress of ceremonies is Emmy-winning broadcast journalist Jan Yanehiro.

This diverse gathering includes civic leaders, leading philanthropists and cultural leaders. The gala’s honorary committee is led by I.M.O.W. Board member Jennifer Siebel Newsom and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, Chief of Protocol for the State of California and San Francisco Charlotte Mailliard Shultz and former Secretary of State George P. Shultz and includes Senator Barbara Boxer, Congresswoman Lois Capps, Senator Dianne Feinstein, San Francisco District Attorney Kamala Harris, Chief Joanne Hayes-White, SFFD, Congresswoman Barbara Lee, Senator Mark Leno, Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez, Congresswoman Lynn C. Woolsey, among others. Event chairs are Stacey C. Fleece and Marie Louise Hurabiell. The event’s presenting sponsor is Wells Fargo Bank. Proceeds help support I.M.O.W.’s exhibitions and programs for 2009.
