Consider yourself warned: the Great River Amazon Raft Race, the longest of its kind in the world, travels a route from Nauta to Iquitos along the Amazon river, covering 180 kilometers (112 miles) in three days on team-constructed (are you sure it floats?) balsa-log rafts. Amateur adventure seekers and supporters from all over the world come to Iquitos every October to compete for bragging rights, and the honor of living up to the race’s motto: “The Faint Of Heart Need Not Apply!”
Last year, fifty teams from Peru as well as England, America, Ireland, Australia, Germany, Austria, France, Switzerland, Iran and Israel turned out to participate in this unique sporting event, in which teams of four compete in one of three categories: Men’s, Women’s and Mixed. Whether you are a serious, competitive rafter, or merely an intrepid amateur of any age, three days and nights along this spectacular, unspoiled stretch of the upper Amazon is an unforgettable and often, life-changing, multicultural experience.
This year’s event takes place from the 4th to the 9th of October, 2011. Teams must be in Iquitos on the 4th of October in the evening, and the actual race starts on the 6th in the morning.
