AFFORDABILITY & PROXIMITY TO DUBROVNIK

The Hotel Major is a hidden gem, especially for travelers arriving late or departing early on International flights. It is also the perfect haven for those who love convenience yet prefer to be away from the busy Dubrovnik city center. And… definitely, a find for many of us who simply refuse to pay the higher in-city hotel rates.

I discovered this quaint hotel property one afternoon after touring the beautiful city of Cavtat and a seaside vineyard. My host recommended a stop at the hotel for lunch and some local wine. We were welcomed with open arms by the gracious hotel family. Hotel Major’s restaurant’s menu reflects the region with locally inspired dishes and farm to table fresh ingredients. Lunch was an extended three course menu featuring a true favorite, octopus salad, followed by warm risotto with chicken and a unique touch of lavender. The main course showcased the wealth of the nearby sea; we dined on a divine dish of Sea Bass and a hearty fish stew. The meal ended with selections from an incredible dessert tray. The sweet bread tart topped with pistachio ice cream and a richly decadent serving of crème brulée were irresistible! The wine, a coastal Plavic Mali grape varietal, was a highlight, making lunch at Hotel Major’s restaurant one of my most memorable dining experiences in Croatia. Good wine and great service are always key ingredients for a fabulous meal!

After exploring Dubrovnik…. be sure to visit Cavtat.

Cavtat: This beautiful and quaint medieval village, on the southern coast, is the site of an ancient Greek settlement and home to Dubrovnik’s first settlers after the earthquake. The town is well known as the birthplace of Vlaho Bukovac, one of Croatia’s most beloved painters. It is a 20-30 minute car or bus ride north from Dubrovnik’s city center. If time allows, join in the folkloric festivities of nearby Cilipi, a town that regularly celebrates the Konavle region’s rich traditions every Sunday from April through October.
