The Plaza Hotel & Casino has had a long and colorful history. Deputing as the Union Plaza Hotel in 1971, the casino property has stood the test of time. Now 40 years and $35 million in renovations later, this celebrated icon is the shining star of Downtown Las Vegas. The property is a big and bold classic that boasts 1000 + newly renovated rooms and an updated 80,000 square foot casino that rivals any gaming floor on the Strip.

The Plaza Hotel & Casino sparkles in terms of overall value and location.

The design elements are modern with a touch of 70’s retro chic. Think Studio 54 meets Saturday Night Fever! Chrome and glass accents dress up the lobby. Contemporary furniture, glittery chandeliers, vintage photos and an outrageous lipstick red tufted front desk give the Plaza true sex appeal. And, who could miss the glowing spaceship structure in the driveway, the Plaza’s majestic dome. It is nostalgic treasures such as this that make downtown Las Vegas unique. Night owls who enjoy a good time but prefer a break from the Strip will not be disappointed. Just outside the Plaza’s front doors, you will find entertainment 24/7 with the Fremont Street Experience – a lively pedestrian friendly party spot speckled with bars, casinos, vendors and more.

For those who want to hit the Strip or have a keen interest in mobile gaming, the trip is an easy 10-15 minute ride, depending on traffic, by bus or cab. Walking the distance (about 1 mile) is not recommended. Moreover, the Fremont/Downtown area is not my top pick for designer fashionistas or foodies. There are no boutiques, spas or 5 star restaurants that I could find. Currently, the closest thing to a trendy establishment is a Starbucks. *I am told this will all change by early 2012.

*the restoration project was not complete at the time of my visit. Plans include several onsite dining/entertainment venues –  Sushi and Mexican restaurants, a fine dining steakhouse, a dueling piano bar, a casual food court and a performance theater.

Downtown Las Vegas continues to offer visitors an authentic experience with time capsule pricing. High rollers are hard to spot in this part of town. But Fremont Street is still one place in Vegas where you can find a hearty breakfast for under $15 that includes an ice cold brew!

Just remember…if you keep your expectations in check, the Plaza Hotel & Casino is sure to make you feel like a winner.
